The first of the 'proper' 2010 D1RC events kicked off at Silverstone Circuit on 10/11th April when the D1RC drift display team strutted their stuff in front of the crowds at the International Styling and Tuning Show. The show was held on the brand new Stowe Circuit located within the infield of the GP circuit and the paddock area tarmac had only been laid the week before so was absolutely virgin - flat and smooth and perfect for drift competition and displays.
The weather was near perfect too, dry and sunny, so the spectator numbers were particularly high which kept us all very busy from setting up at 06.30 to knocking down again at 17.30 on both days. Apart from providing some great drifting, accompanied by our resident DJ and regular commentators and judges, we also had the pleasure of answering endless questions from the often stunned audiences, most popular of which was (of course) 'where can I buy one of those and how much are they?'. The HPI banners were much in evidence so it was easy to suggest they visit the HPI website but it didn't end there, with the inevitable 'can I have a go?'. We really must get a couple of more robust and budget Sprints or E10s to hand - a project for the future maybe. Apart from the impressive looking formation drifting sessions, we ran four competitions over the weekend, qualifying and finals, and the HPI Cyclone TC proved a winner, taking 3 of the 4 wins, two in the hands of Ben Moore and one down to myself, the other win going to a multi-brand hybrid special of Tom Walton, all going home with a HPI prize. HPI prizes were also won by 'Man of the Meet', Richard Lincoln-Smith who went that extra mile helping out over the weekend. Given the dominance of the Cyclone TC at the season opening D1RC Shakedown at Colchester just a couple of weeks ago in the hands of HPI driver Pete Gray, it looks as though it could be another good year for the HPI drivers - though I shouldn't speak too soon! Round 1 of the D1RC National Drift Series will be at Colchester on 8 May but we will be displaying at Oulton Park for the Modified Live European Drift Championship and Time Attack event on 24 April, full details of which can be found on the D1RC forums at DRCCentral.com/forums. So from me, John Turner and the team, hope to see you there!
