D1RC at Modified Live, Oulton Park 24 April

Fri, 30th April 2010

On 24 April the D1RC drift display team were performing for the visitors of the Modified Live event at Oulton Park in the sunny countryside of Cheshire for it’s second exhibition event of the year. Unlike the fresh new tarmac of Silverstone’s new Stowe circuit, the more mature Oulton paddock provided some ‘interesting’ surfaces to drift on so after a couple of attempted serious competition displays we adapted our display to include some fun challenges!

Despite raising ride heights and softening the overall setups, the lumpy surface was still a lottery with smooth drifts suffering sharp kicks as the 2" HPI T-Drift control tyres, a hard plastic compound, caught on the scale pot holes. This, in itself, quickly became an art to be mastered and it was Tom Walton with his hybrid drift chassis who coped the best, taking both competitions from Stu Cave's HPI Pro-D drift chassis, both winning HPI prizes for their efforts, closely followed by an array of other drivers including the HPI team Cyclones. As the afternoon progressed we introduced Ben Smith’s ‘Ring My Bell’ challenge which was a real crowd pleaser. In display drifting it's usual to try to clip apexes and scrape the rear wing on the wall of the corner exit, not easy when there’s no wall, so Ben created a 'bell tower' with a small budgie bell hanging from a cranked mast. Positioned on the corner exit it proved very difficult to strike the bell and still exit clean - but when you did the applause exploded! Well done Ben - now everyone's coming up with new ideas! Man of the Meet was awarded to Simon Landgrebe for going the extra mile, winning a HPI prize for completing the Oulton site survey for us, even if he does only live around the corner! Round 1 of the D1RC National Drift Series now follows on 8 May after which we revisit Silverstone for the Japanese Tuning Show on 23 May. We're then back in the thick of the action with Rounds 2 and 3 of the Drift Series at Eastbourne and Snetterton before the BIG one, the very first Drift World Championship - the D1RC Drift Worlds sponsored by HPI Europe and Radio Race Car International at Snetterton Park on 1-4 July. All details for these events can be found at DRCCentral.com/forums. If you're free, consider yourself invited by me, John Turner, and the team to come along and watch the fun.
