BRCA Electric Buggy Nationals Rd2 – Kent

Wed, 13th June 2012

Race Report By Ben Cosgrove Kent Model Car Club hosted round 2 of the BRCA Electric Rallycross and Truggy nationals. We were all worried about whether or not the meeting would actually take place after non stop rain for weeks leading up to race day. The club did a great job of preparing the track and we were very happy to see the rain had stopped and we could have a race meeting! Three RTR Buggies! At this meeting we had 3 RTR electric buggies in use, with Ben Cosgrove driving the Trophy Buggy Flux and local drivers Nathan Ralls and young sensation Kyle Moon driving the Vorza Flux HP cars. Ben arrived and delivered the standard RTR cars to Nathan and Kyle who set about installing their PTs and receivers ready for practice.

The Kent track was very difficult to go fast on. One half of the track was very fast and open with some great elevation changes. The other side was a very technical section with challenging jumps. The track even had a cross over in the middle! Overall it was fun to drive a lap but very hard to do a clean run. Practice went OK for the team, considering the lack of tracktime and knowledge of driving the cars for Nathan and Kyle. All 3 drivers were posting top 10 times, which was an encouraging start to the day. Ben had a strong end to qualification with a 5th and 3rd in the round putting him 4th on the grid and Nathan had a 4th and a 5th putting him directly into the final in 7th. Kyle had a few scrappy runs so he ended up 12th overall and in the B final. Unfortunately with the bad weather forecast we had a few drivers missing, so we had no truggy representation so we had to focus on the buggy cars. Kyle was up first in the B final and he had a very solid drive controlling his pace excellently to win the final and make the bump up into the A final. We had to wait for about an hour before the A final as they ran some Truggy finals to give the guys who bumped up time to charge and prep the cars. All 3 of our cars were on the Hot Bodies Khaos Red compound tyres which were working excellently on the dry & dusty track. The A final started and Ben got a great start battling with Chris Doughty and moved into a solid third position. Nathan had a strong start and moved up into the top 5 and then into 4th after Ben made some serious errors in the quad jumps. The rain started to fall and this was a worry for our tyre choice as other drivers seemed to be on softer compounds and they started to catch us. Some good clean racing later and Ben finished in 5th with Nathan in 6th. Kyle had a mixed fortune race but managed to improve his position to 10th overall. Stock HPI RTR Buggies in National A Final! It was a great day for the HPI RTR team, once again showing you CAN take cars off the shelf in the local model shop and race them at National level with serious pace and enjoyment! The series moves on to Coventry on 8th July and we hope to have a drier meeting than the Midland Dirt Masters which was unfortunately cancelled to be rerun later in the year.
